Itsmy.com hits UK landmark

Stuart O’Brien Today, 6:10pm

Mobile social network notches 300,000 users in the UK.

Itsmy.com, the mobile/PC social networking site operated by Germany-based Gofresh, has amassed 300,000 members in the UK.

And its reckons lazy, work shy Brits are flocking to mobile because 49 per cent of them can’t access social networks from their office PCs.

Gofresh surveyed 5,000 people between 16 and 54 years old across Europe and compares the UK figure to mainland Europe, where only a third of lazy employees are unable to check their profiles from their desks, presumably due to lax firewalls.

Gofresh CEO Vince Staybl said: “People want to be connected with their friends 24/7 wherever they are. This becomes more and more difficult, as PC internet access is limited or not available at all.”

Xbox goes networking

Microsoft will be adding a raft of social networking features to its online Xbox Live service with the next Dashboard update. According to the press release:

With the prevalence of social media websites such as MySpace and FaceBook, this type of capability has largely come to be expected from consumers as a means to relate in an online community. … When the Fall Dashboard update is distributed on December 4, the new default setting on Xbox LIVE will be active, enabling members to see the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members.

Friends lists are an important feature of sites like Facebook, MySpace and other connectivity providers. It’s a clever move for Microsoft in advance of the anticipated library of features rumoured for PlayStation’s upcoming social titles, Home and Little Big Planet. The community is already strong on these sites. It will interesting to watch what else they offer, and how they grapple with the inevitable privacy issues.

Nokia predicts big things from ‘circular entertainment’
Stuart O’Brien Today, 12:14pm

That means user-gen content, and Nokia reckons it’ll account for 25 per cent of the market in 2012.

A global survey of mobile users by Nokia has led the company to predict that a newly-coined ‘circular entertainment’ category will account for a quarter of the mobile content market in five years.

The category encompasses content that has been created, edited and shared within a peer circle rather than coming out of traditional media companies - something hitherto known as user-generated content.

Nokia’s study was carried out by The Future Laboratory, which interviewed 9,000 consumers from 17 countries. As part of the research Nokia said it identified four key driving trends - Immersive Living; Geek Culture; G Tech and Localism.

Among the quantitative data the study threw up includes:

23% buy movies in digital format
35% buy music on MP3 files
25% buy music on mobile devices
39% watch TV on the internet
23% watch TV on mobile devices
46% regularly use IM (37% on a mobile device)
29% regularly blog
28% regularly access social networking sites
22% connect using technologies such as Skype
17% take part in Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games
17% upload to the internet from a mobile device

Mark Selby, Noka’s VP of multimedia, said: “From our research we predict that up to a quarter of the entertainment being consumed in five years will be what we call ‘Circular’. The trends we are seeing show us that people will have a genuine desire not only to create and share their own content, but also to remix it, mash it up and pass it on within their peer groups – a form of collaborative social media.”
